Our Story
Is a story about a student who didn't know they needed glasses.
This is our founder, Dylan.
His story started in a Grade 9 Geography class.
Katie: "Dylan, why are you copying off my notes instead of the board?" to which Dylan simply replied: "I can't read the board."
Socially, athletically, academically. Everything.
It turned out Dylan had needed glasses for years but never knew. For Dylan, life was just... naturally blurry. He wasn't about to sit idly by.
While working at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kawartha Lakes, Dylan spoke with a parent when they came to pick-up their child. Dylan spoke to them about how he recognized signs with their child’s vision that he used to experience. The mom told Dylan she had never thought twice about the symptoms he spoke of but appreciated his comments. The child was wearing glasses 3 weeks later. The smile the child wore was fondly familiar to the feeling he had when he wore his glasses to school for the first time. It was this moment that Dylan realized how important intervention was to addressing vision-loss on a greater scale. His career goal became to proactively search for patients with vision-loss and get them into the Optometrist’s office.
The journey is far from over.
Eye Care Ontario has a goal of serving 1,000,000 patients.
To date, Dylan has worked with many Eye Care Professionals, Employers and Institutions to help hundreds of youth, adults, and seniors connect with local eye care professionals - collectively saving them thousands of dollars and years of productivity loss.
Today, Eye Care Ontario has its sights set on improving access to many more communities and becoming a safety net for identifying vision loss and supporting families to get the care that they need.
If you're anything like Dylan, or anyone else who wears glasses, you certainly remember putting on your first pair of glasses and how you felt seeing the world clearly for the first time. It's experiences like this that motivate us to do more.
